The word ‘tweed’ itself is an English variant on the Scottish word ‘tweel’
In recent years there has been a resurgent interest in the Tweed jacket due to its traditional look and high quality. We offer Harris Tweed which along with Donegal is the best tweed in the world. The Tweed jacket is becoming more popular with our customers. Fortunately, due to modern manufacturing processes the tweed can now be produced in lighter weights making it perfect to wear all year round. Modern day tweed fabrics come in an almost limitless variety of weights and colors.
The original name of the cloth was tweel, Scots for twil, it being woven in a twilled rather than a plain pattern. Our best selling cloth and most famous tweed jacket is Harris tweed, from the Isle of Harris, in Scotland, in the Outer Hebrides. Originally it was hand-woven from pure virgin wool. Harris tweed stands out because it incorporates subtle flecks of color by using native dyes to achieve hints of red, orange, rust and brown throughout the cloth. The finished cloth is inspected and stamped on the reverse side with its trademark Orb, as certification and to promote and protect the name of Harris Tweed.
Our Holland & Sherry Harris Tweed collection incorporates the traditional warm, rustic colours, which have come to evoke the countryside and outdoor pursuits associated with being British.
